Consilium has together with the system integrator Goodtech finished the first system in the fire detection retrofit project on Wintershall’s production platform, Brage.

Consilium has installed the fire detection system on the Brage platform. An important demand from Wintershall was that neither production nor security should be affected during the installation. Consilium met these demands with great success and used existing infrastructure to make this a very efficient retrofit.

Consilium has an innovative modular approach which makes it possible to replace an existing fire detection system simply by building it into an existing offshore cabinet. Consilium reuses existing communication links with top systems and by this they can eliminate the need to do changes to the safety system. This gives a high reduction in both costs and space.

“Together with the suppliers Consilium and Goodtech, Wintershall have successfully upgraded and put into operation the first of two fire centrals on Brage. It is important that the supply chain are able to challenge existing solutions, as well as delivering quality in every step of the project execution. So far Wintershall is very pleased with the new solution and are looking forward to having the complete system up and running in the near future.” Gøran Solsvik, Project Leader Modifications, Wintershall Norge AS

In 2015, Consilium launched its new CFD5000 fire detection system for offshore and transport applications. Since February 19, 2016, the system has also been SIL 2 certified by TÜV NORD according to IEC 61508.

Market‐driven development
In many parts of the world, the offshore industry demands SIL 2 certified fire detection systems. One example is the Norwegian market, where Consilium recently opened an office in the “oil capital” Stavanger. “The SIL 2 certification of CFD5000 opens up new sales opportunities for us,” says Patrik Saethe, Quality & Safety Manager at Consilium. “You need to prove a certain level of safety to succeed, and now we have that proof in place.” Consilium started to develop CFD5000 in January 2013 and SIL 2 certification was on the agenda from the start.

Safety is a safe investment
CFD5000 is based on the reliable Consilium Common Platform (CCP) with additional hardware and software to meet SIL 2 requirements both in the offshore industry and the European train market. CFD5000 meets new building and retrofit requirements. It is possible to interface CFD5000 with existing Consilium CCP‐based fire detection systems and implement SIL 2 in steps, or design a new system with different safety levels. CFD5000 is designed for long proof test intervals, cutting down on time and costs for testing. The new UNI‐detector generation is programmable and therefore only comes in two versions – for non‐explosive and explosive environments. This reduces time and money spent on logistics, spare parts orders and stock keeping.

PRESS RELEASE 16-10-2015

Consilium opens office in Norway's "oil capital" Stavanger for the marketing of fire detection systems to the offshore industry in Norway. Consilium is also launching a newly developed fire detection system according to the SIL 2 standard, specifically designed for offshore applications.

Consilium opens office in the Norwegian city of Stavanger as part of its focus on fire detection systems for the offshore industry. Stavanger is a base for the Norwegian oil industry and proximity to customers therefore make the city a natural choice for Consilium to establish themselves in. The establishment will initially be supported by Consilium's offices in Oslo and Gothenburg. As operations in Stavanger develop, the idea is that it will include sales as well as project management, service and support.

- The offshore industry is an interesting market for Consilium to develop. Despite the temporary downturn in the offshore industry we see that Consiliums solutions, that are flexible and possible to escalate, can create value for the operators. Norway has some of the most stringent requirements in the world within the offshore sector. By establishing ourselves here, we demonstrate that we meet high quality and safety requirements, says Trygve Andersen, Managing Director of Consilium Norway A/S.

Fire detection systems according to SIL 2 standard
Consilium is one of the world's leading suppliers of fire detection systems for marine environments. The company has spent several years developing a new fire detection system, CFD 5000, designed specifically for offshore applications, such as oil platforms, refineries and floating support units. The fire detection is designed to meet high demands for reliability and quality. It is in the final phase of its SIL 2 certification and hardware as well as software is developed in close cooperation with the certification body TÜV NORD.

In addition to high reliability and quality the fire detection is designed to be cost effective in both the deployment and operational phases. This allows Consilium to support the oil industry's efforts to reduce its costs.

- When installing our fire detection, it is possible to use the existing cable installation in the object where the installation will take place, which could mean significant cost reductions. The high quality of our fire detection system also makes it possible to extend the interval for the mandatory testing of the system that needs to be carried out regularly, which also means cost savings, says Trygve Andersen.

“What If” the ship owner could constantly get full access to and control of the complete situation onboard their vessels. Get full insight in how the vessel is handled and in the condition of all relevant systems, get full insight in accidents or incidents just minutes after they occurred, track and analyze performance of vessel and crew. Always have firsthand information and facts at any time in their own pocket.

Would this revolutionize how the shipping industry works?
As every ship owner knows implementation of new regulations in many cases cause a lot of headache and investments. But how would it be possible to actually create value for the customer of the required equipment?

The most recent requirements in regards of SOALS Ch V is the new mandatory requirement of ECDIS and the increased requirement of VDR functionality.

The new VDR regulation require the ECDIS picture together with general ECDIS information and several other data sources to be recorded for a minimum duration of 30 days.
In addition to the systems that must be recorded the VDR might also easily be interfaced to any other source of information such as fuel measuring systems, cargo handling systems, environmental controlling systems etc.

The VDR will in general terms become a complete collector of all relevant data onboard the vessel.

Now, how could this large collection of data create a value for the customer?
The administration require more and more reporting to be done, the fuel cost to run the vessels increase, new and tougher environmental regulations has to be followed, higher load on the crew to perform more tasks, greater amount of vessels on the waters, new risks with hijacking and robberies etc.

The data to simplify these tasks is today available in the VDR system, but how can it simply be accessed and how should the aspects of data security, personal integrity and band width issues be handled.

The answer is with a specially designed and innovative system from Consilium called Consilium Cloud™. This is a collection name for several web based applications using the data stored in the VDR onboard the vessel.

The first and most typical application is the totally web based Remote Playback. This application will securely access and download the data from the vessel and directly in the web application run the playback of the data itself. There is no need to install any playback software in the computer and the web based playback can be run on any PC, tablet or smart phone.

This application will bring the user from total lack of knowledge to full control of the facts and awareness of the situation with simply a few clicks on his tablet, smart phone or PC.

The user is able to choose exactly what time period or geographic area that is of interest, select exactly the amount of data that is needed and within minutes have the playback running anywhere.

The security of the connection is assured by Consilium innovative Cloud Connect™. This will secure that external security breach is nearly impossible. The crew integrity is secured by a key lock that will invoke transmission of microphone audio ashore without the ship captains approval.

Future applications will include Emission monitoring reports directly in the web portal, Vetting reports, analyzing tools to handle big data analyzing to find optimal vessel operations and find trends in crew operation and vessel performance and many more.

The use of the recorded data is barley limited to the imagination of the user.
